Jaylor 5850 TMR Mixer: Taking Nutrition to New Heights at VanDerMolen Farms.
When both of their nutritionists recommended a Jaylor, the VanDerMolen family gave Phil NyKamp at Oneida New Holland a call to spec out the best configuration for their operation.
Farming in Jarvis, Ontario for four generations (going on five), the innovative family has been using TMR for about 20 years already and various tumble mixers before then. When the time came for a larger mixer Jaylor was the clear choice.
Having used their new 5850 Trailer now for a while they can see why the nutritionists talked about the consistency of the Jaylor, but they also noted how much faster it is than their previous TMR. They are using a 125HP Case tractor but are very impressed with how little HP they actually have to use to power the 800 cubic foot mixer.

“Hi I’m Rob from Sutton Farms in Nappanee, Ontario. Our farm is located on the North shore of Lake Ontario halfway between Toronto and Montreal. We’re currently milking 75-80 cows and cash cropping 700 acres of corn, beans, barley and hay and we also have a custom spreading business. Currently I’m farming with my father, a full-time employee, Derek, and some part time help. My great-great grandfather bought the farm in 1904 and I’m the 5th generation so my kids will be the 6th if they decide to take over. The current tie-stall barn we are milking in now was built in 1929 after a fire and next spring we’re planning on building a new free-stall.”
The sludge we spread is a composted by-product from the paper mill next door. We went with a pair of Jaylor M1600HD manure spreaders because the design was simple and rugged and it looked like they were going to stand up to the test that we were going to put them through. It takes a lot to spread this stuff -it’s all the fibers they can’t reuse after cleaning recycled paper so it’s very dense. We were wearing out our previous spreaders quite fast and there was high maintenance on them whereas the Jaylors have been working really well. Our soil levels have gone from 3% to 6.8% organic matter over the past 15 years so it’s really good especially in a drought year like this it helps retain moisture in the heavy clay soil.
We’ve been using Jaylor TMR Mixers for 11, going on 12 years now. Our first one was a 3425 and we just recently replaced it with a 5575. They do a really good job-low horsepower, good quality mix and we’re really happy with the performance. Right now we’re feeding haylage, corn silage, high-moisture corn and a supplement so it’s about a 67% forage ration. We have our vet do our ration and after we purchased the new mixer the feed company nutritionist did a shaker box test and it was pretty perfect. A good quality mix helps us fill these recent quota increases and make sure we’re shipping as much milk as we can.” – ROB SUTTON

Really Good, Mixes Really Nice
“Hi, I’m Piet. I work for Kasko Cattle, Sandy Hill from Taber, Alberta. I’m one of the managers here. Last year we got a Jaylor 51250HD Truckmount TMR Mixer. We really like it. Works really good, mixes really nice. And the service we get is excellent. Kasko Cattle has 4 yards. At this yard our ration mainly consists of barley, supplement, DDGs, corn silage and French fries. French fries come from a factory on a corner here that we truck away these fries from. Fries is a lot of weight to a small amount of volume. A payloader bucket would be 5,000 pounds, easy.
With 13,000 head, truck mounts are a lot more efficient, I think, and faster. We’ve got nice feed alleys and it’s easy to get anywhere in our yard with our feed trucks. These big vertical mixers, we’ve got two of them going every day which puts the total amount of loads per day for two trucks combined at about 15, 16 loads of feed. Compared to our other yard that has horizontal feed mixers, they are double that if not more on loads per day. Definitely cuts in time. And efficiency, I think, it’s a lot better.”- PIET HEGER
I Chose JAYLOR For Their Mix Consistency
Hello, I’m Guillaume Laroche of Rochela Farms in Chesterville. I am the third generation on this farm. My grandfather bought this land, passed it on to my father several years ago and my father and I are now doing the ownership transfer. We farm about 700 acres. Hay, corn, soy and oats mostly for our own use. Some of the soybeans we sell.
I recently bought a Jaylor 5425 following the collapse of a silo which caused our loss of silage. We built this new feed room to accommodate the stationary mixer. One of the reasons we bought this mixer is the fact that it ran on 3, 10 Horsepower motors. We’re in a more remote area here and 600-volt power isn’t available.
Our farm is a free stall, but we still opted for a stationary mixer given the limited space we have in the barn we can’t go with the tractor in the barn with the animals. Hence the choice of the mixer. The mix is comprised of two large square bales, soybeans, corn, my minerals and water. Following the purchase of our mixer, the cows have increased in fat, production and they are healthier overall. Calving is more successful and complications following calving are virtually absent. We have about 60 Kilograms of quota and we produce an average of 3000 Kilos of milk every 2 days. I chose Jaylor for their mix consistency, the quality of the cut, the number of knives and the very good warranty the manufacturer offers.

The Most Consistent Mixer We’ve Ever Had
“We farm 1300 acres of irrigation and feed about 1700 to 1800 head of cattle at our peak times going down in the summer to about 300. Mostly we feed to fat—a really high barley ration for most of the season. When we start the cattle out we feed some dry hay and straw in the mix with the barley silage, we also feed some distillers grains. The cattle really like the taste and we think they eat more because of it. We’re very happy with our Jaylor 5575 mixer. You know it’s a really consistent blend—the most consistent mixer we’ve ever had. It mixes very quickly and it gives us the freedom to put whatever we want in the blend. The viewing window in the side lets us see when it’s mixed while filling and how much is left after feeding each pen. The ones we had in the past haven’t had that.
We’ve been using this unit for almost two years and other than greasing the machine, we’ve done virtually nothing to it—we’re very happy. The heavy duty set of tires on it gives us good flotation even when it’s got a really heavy mix in it. It’s very well built and it does exactly what it’s supposed to. The dealer we bought it from, was a big part of the reason we went with Jaylor. I’m Adam Robey, fifth generation farmer in Adairville, Kentucky. We have a 2500 cow dairy, milking about 2100 head, running Jaylor mixers on all of our TMR work, milk cows and heifers, replacements, some steers that we raise also. So we’ve got single-screw mix all the way up to a 1000 cubic feet twin screw for the milk cows.

I’m a fifth generation farmer so our family’s been here for about a hundred years, been milking for 60, and this site that we’re on was built in 2001. So we’ve been here for about 14 years now and, during that time, we’ve expanded from about 400 head to in the 2500 head range. Our rolling herd average currently is about 29,500. Coming to this facility and going to complete TMR mixing and 3X milking, it took our rolling herd average from about 21,000 up to 29,000 over a 3-year period. So, the freestall barns and sand bedding and proper nutrition and cow comfort and all of those things have all come together to make for good milk production.

“We hired a nutritionist to come in and do a complete audit of our operation so we could see where we stood with every aspect of our feeding program. He sampled and tested the Jaylor for the consistency and quality of the mix to make sure it was consistent throughout the entire load. He also tested for particle size especially the dry hay ingredient. He concluded that the mix coming from the Jaylor was as completely mixed as could possibly be tested and was one of the most thorough mixes he had ever seen coming from a TMR mixer. The results from the shaker box for particle size were dead on.
This nutritionist hired to conduct the audit was from a different company than our day-to-day nutritionist. We wanted to get a different perspective from an outside person who doesn’t see our operation on a regular basis. It was very beneficial for us and for our regular nutritionist.”

JAYLOR Paid For Itself In 4 Months
“We had an older horizontal mixer. We could not incorporate hay into the mix and we struggled to hit 70 lbs. average. We wanted to get a vertical so that we could feed hay. The Jaylor was demonstrated at our farm. We made a slight change to our feeding program when we bought the Jaylor. Since then our production has increased to 80-81 lbs. per cow and the butterfat has gone from 3.4 to 3.7%. Our herd health has improved. We milk 200 cows. Even if the Jaylor only gets 1/2 credit for our production increase, the Jaylor paid for itself in 4 months.
The reason for the increase is that the Jaylor gives us a consistent feed. The cows can’t sort out the grain. As a result there is no more of the “slug” feeding. We feed our milking cows 4 lbs. of hay per cow per day plus corn silage, haylage, and a soy base. We have a free stall operation with 3 milking groups plus heifers and dry cows. So we make a total of 5 batches per day. The Jaylor also cleans out well at the end of the feeding. This is a solidly built machine.”

Cows Look Healthier With A JAYLOR
“Back in the Spring of 2006 we decided to make a change to the way we were feeding our 80 cow dairy herd. For as long as I can remember we have been feeding a partial TMR with our hay being fed on top of the silage and grain and supplement fed through computer feeders. This was a result of many belly aching and bloating cows throughout the years. About 7 years ago we tried a horizontal auger type of mixer wagon and because of the amount of alfalfa hay we feed (15lbs/cow/day) it just could not handle that amount of hay. After doing some research I decided to try a Jaylor 3650 verticle mixer. We have now been using this Jaylor for 7 months and the results have been Great!! We have not had one bloated cow, very few belly aches, cows look healthier, and throughout these 7 months our cows have averaged 40kgs/cow/day. Shaker Box Test Was Really Even
“I’m pretty pleased with it. Maintenance wise there isn’t much to worry about a little grease and watch to oil level and occasionally change the knives.
I really pleased with the finished feed out. We did a shaker box test just awhile ago and it was really even from the beginning to the end.
We are running an old 4240 on it and it handles it fine. You can run that thing real easy at 1000 rpm’s (engine) and even when you shut it down it doesn’t take much to get it started up again. It starts up real easy with a load in it.”

“I bought my first 2425 Jaylor mixer back in 2003. I was generally quite pleased with this product and did not feel the need to upgrade although it was a bit on the small size. I was introduced to the 4650 twin screw through my dealer, Avenue Machinery and the local rep from Jaylor. I did a demo recently and was impressed with the difference in the mix. I can now mix a 8 10,000 lb. load in less than 5 minutes. I fill the mixer first with hay, alfalfa silage, corn silage and grain (in that order). Production has increased from 29 kg. to 34 kg. and butter went from 3.5% to 3.7%. I am very pleased with my new large volume mixer that I can run through a narrow alley. The consistent mix is the most noticeable change. ”

A JAYLOR Customer For 12 Years
“Twelve years ago we started with a 3000 series Jaylor. Then as we grew we bought bigger mixers. We went to a 38 series and now we have a 31000 mixer. We mix 27,000 lbs in a batch. This includes 2-3 lbs. of hay to the milking cows. Dry cows get 8 lbs. per day. Altogether we milk about 1,000 cows.
We bought Jaylor because we wanted to be able to mix hay. Jaylor requires minimal maintenance. There are not a lot of moving parts that can go wrong. Occasionally we need to change the knives. It gives us a good mix. Whether we mix 1400 lbs. or 27,000 lbs. the quality of mix is the same.
Our present machine the 31000 is only 4” wider and 13” longer than our previous machine with twice the capacity. The Jaylor’s ability to mix hay, the capacity, the uniform mix, and the low maintenance has worked for us.”

A Good Thorough Mix
“I watched a [competitor brand] demonstration and they put a kind of loose grass bale in it and it took forever to grind it up and when they were done it wasn’t a nice cut, it still was too long. It also seemed like it took a lot of power to get it done.” “Our Jaylor doesn’t take the power we thought it would when we first bought it. We grind the round bale first (4×4 haylage bale) and then we add dry small square bales next. Our nutritionist got us onto that. We were feeding our dry hay alone and he said we were getting to much separation by feeding different components at different times and the cows weren’t eating everything they should have been eating.
